Time-Lapse Fundamentals Workshop (Feb19)

Sun, 03 Feb

|

ServerHouse Ltd & Cams Hall Estate

Time-lapse is a cinematic technique in which each frame of the final movie is captured in a certain amount of time (which is why it is called ‘time-lapse’) that is longer than the one in which it appears. Done right, and these mini movies will capture your audience and astound the viewer.

About The Event

Thanks to this method of capturing a scene, we are able to speed up the time that passes to such an extent that we can illustrate something that would not normally be noticeable (for example: the relative motion of the stars; the simple movement of the clouds; the melting of ice cubes in a glass of orange juice, and so on.)

The first thing you need to know is that you don’t need a £2000 camera to produce a good time-lapse. Believe it or not, some of the best video clips were shot with a £300 compact camera.

The important thing, however, is to be aware of the fact that, while it is true that it only takes 3 hours to understand the fundamentals of creating a time-lapse, you must have a great desire to experiment and to learn constantly as time goes by in order to create a really good finished item. Practice will make perfect.

This is NOT a Beginner Photography Workshop. It is understood that you know how to use your camera as I will not have time to teach this on the workshop.

What's included;

  • An introduction to Time-Lapse Photography and the principles of how to set your camera up.
  • A short tour around Cams Hall. Setting up for [and executing] these shots will take time, so there will only be one location on this workshop.
  • Tuition and guidance provided throughout the event, on both a one to one and group basis, to maximise your potential.
  • Once finished shooting I will guide you through the steps I take to process and edit the images and create the Time-Lapse video. This second part of the course is classroom based.
  • You leave with full understanding of the settings used and have the ability to replicate the same elsewhere.

Essential Gear;

  • Camera and lenses - doesn't matter what you have. I can work with most camera manufacturers (I use Canon and Sony - So I will know more about them). If you have a wide angle lens, that would be beneficial.
  • Tripod - Definitely essential.
  • Camera Intervalometer - this is essential as we will be taking about 600 images. You may have this function in camera, so please read your manual. I won't have time to set everyone's camera up. If you require an external intervalometer, then please learn how to use it. I may not have time to teach this on the workshop.
  • ND Filters - If you have any, bring them. We will be doing exposures from 1 seconds and if it is a bright day, you may need one.
  • Food or means to buy food (This is not supplied on the Workshop) - snacks and water.

Non-Essential Gear;

Laptop (fully Charged) with an editing program (like Lightroom) and a movie making program (Like iMovie or Movie Maker). If you don't have this, don't worry, you may not be able to follow along, but I will be showing the process on my Laptop. This process is available in Photoshop, but it is limited. If we have time, I can show you this process too.

Anything else is a bonus.

Parking is free - We will be meeting at Serverhouse Ltd.
